Former Information Security and Architecture Manager. I have lived in sunny Sarasota, Florida since 1990; our family has traveled extensively, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Gibraltar, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Yugoslavia, Cyprus, Japan, China, Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Panama, Columbia, Curacao, Costa Rica, St Thomas, Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, and the Virgin Islands.

Top travel secret

Travel in shoulder season. Late September in the Mediterranean, early May in Japan — the weather is nearly identical to peak season, but the prices and crowds are not. This is probably the single highest-leverage move in all of travel.

In Zurich we happened to be there during their Spring Festival or Sechseläuten. During the festival local guilds parade around the city in costume. The star of the show is the Böög, or snowman which is setup on a massive bonfire. At the end, the Boog's head explodes with fireworks - great fun!
