The Riviera Maya's best kept secret for families on a budget. Mexico's Riviera Maya is absolutely packed with all-inclusive resorts, from ultra-luxury to backpacker-friendly, and somehow Bahia Principe has managed to claim a nice middle ground that keeps families coming back year after year.
With several properties spread between Tulum and Akumal, Bahia Principe Mexico offers that classic Caribbean Mexico experience - cenotes nearby, Mayan ruins down the road, and beaches that look like screensavers - all without requiring you to auction off your car. The Mexican properties are divided into family resorts and adults-only resorts, giving you actual choice based on your travel style. Grand Bahia Principe Tulum, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Akumal welcome families with open arms, complete with kids' clubs, family pools and entertainment designed to keep children occupied while you enjoy your third piña colada.
On the flip side, Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an (adults-only) caters to couples who'd rather not hear "Mom, watch this!" shouted from the pool every 30 seconds. All properties sit on the same stunning stretch of coastline between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, which means you're getting legitimate beach access with that incredible turquoise water Mexico is famous for. The beach here is wide, sandy and swimmable, unlike some Riviera Maya resorts where rocky coastlines or seaweed can be issues. Plus, most Bahia Principe guests can access amenities at neighboring properties within the complex, effectively giving you 8-10 restaurant options, multiple pools and varied entertainment. That's a huge perk that even some luxury brands don't offer. Location-wise, you're about 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen and roughly 60 minutes from Cancun airport, which is pretty standard for this area. Tulum's famous ruins and beach clubs are 15-20 minutes south, cenotes are everywhere, and you can easily book excursions to Chichen Itza, Cozumel or Xcaret. The resort can arrange everything, though as always, booking directly with tour operators often saves money.
Food quality at the Mexican properties tends to be a step above their Caribbean counterparts, probably because, well, you're in Mexico. The authentic Mexican restaurant is usually the star, and breakfast features fresh tropical fruit, made-to-order omelets and enough options to please picky eaters. You'll also find Italian, Asian fusion and international buffets. Not Michelin-star dining, but solid and varied enough to keep you satisfied for a week. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with the Luxury tier offering noticeably better quality, more space and premium amenities. Standard rooms are perfectly fine, though if you're staying more than five nights, the upgrade might be worth considering for the extra comfort and better views.
For families wanting an affordable Riviera Maya vacation or couples looking for a no-frills adults-only escape, Bahia Principe Mexico delivers exactly what you'd expect: good beaches, decent food, plenty of activities and enough tequila to make you forget about checking work emails.
