Norwegian Gem is the fourth and final ship in the popular Jewel Class, and it follows a very standard design that’s almost a copy of its older sisters. I mean, if it’s working, why mess with it, right? I just wish YouTube and Netflix had heard this before introducing ads.
Norwegian Gem originally launched with a waterslide, which made it unique, but that was removed years ago. These days, it’s very similar to Norwegian Pearl - it even has a rock climbing wall! You’ll still want to compare itineraries and prices before picking your favorite, and of course, your friends here at Famvia can give you a hand with that.
What we like about Norwegian Gem
Much like most of the Jewel-Class ships, this is a great option for anyone looking to experience Norwegian Cruise Line for the first time. It offers incredibly affordable vacations, with several Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries starting at just $295 per guest. Sure, the final price is higher once you include taxes and gratuities, but it’s still a very good deal, and you’re paying a fair price to visit places like Nassau and the private island of Great Stirrup Cay.
Entertainment is also pretty good, especially for adults. The ship features the famous Riffz game show, where two teams compete to the sound of rock ’n’ roll; the Blazing Boots country music show; the Ignite the Night dance performance; and the Broadway Cabaret, which plays big Broadway hits. Ignite the Night is brand new, having launched in August 2025. You’ll also find piano bars, karaoke, and the occasional game night. Among the Jewel-Class ships, Gem probably has the best lineup of night entertainment.
Food onboard is also considered good, even in the Main Dining Room and with the limited options available. That deserves a special mention, especially since complimentary food isn’t usually rated highly on Jewel-Class ships. You don’t have access to many restaurants, but what is available tastes good, and many people say that the Gem has better food compared to other ships like Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Pearl.
The bar scene is also pretty good. While you won’t find the fan-favorite Spice H2O bar onboard, you do get the Spinnaker Lounge (an observation lounge with great views and comfy couches), Bliss Ultra Lounge, Sugarcane Mojito Bar, and Shakers Martini & Cocktail Bar as the main highlights.
What we don’t like about Norwegian Gem
There’s definitely a lack of quiet nooks on the ship. Remember, it’s almost 20 years old and offers some great prices, so indoor and outdoor spaces can feel crowded. Hallways are narrow, and if you want some alone time, your cabin will likely be the main place for that. The pool deck is a bit small, with two pools and about four hot tubs, which might not be enough for the number of guests onboard. There is, however, a library that can be a nice spot to relax, though I do miss the Spice H2O bar on a ship like this.
Conclusion
Norwegian Gem is the best Jewel-Class ship after Norwegian Jewel. It has most of what made these ships shine, and the combination of great prices, good entertainment, and tasty food makes it an excellent choice for anyone looking for their next adventure.
