Norwegian Jewel kickstarted a new era of Jewel-Class ships for Norwegian Cruise Line, which went on to include three more vessels and wrapped up with Norwegian Gem in 2007.
These ships are actually very similar to the Dawn-Class: they’re mid-size, offer plenty of dining options, and bring that nostalgic feeling of sailing back in the mid-2000s. That’s especially true with Norwegian Jewel, since there are no waterparks, waterslides, or climbing walls onboard. The main difference? This was the ship that introduced what we now know as The Haven, and it also brought in some Broadway-style shows that are still part of NCL’s lineup today.
What we like about Norwegian Jewel
Norwegian Jewel isn’t the most modern ship out there, but it often comes with prices that are hard to beat. In fact, it’s usually cheaper than ships like Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn, even though those are older vessels (and were refurbished more recently). A 4-day cruise on Norwegian Jewel can start at around $305 and, even better, a 7-day Canada & New England sailing can be found for about $355. Those are some amazing prices you’ll definitely want to keep in mind when planning your next vacation.
This was also the ship that introduced The Haven and the whole “ship within a ship” concept. The Haven is a private, luxurious area on Norwegian Jewel with the best suites onboard, accommodating between 3 and 8 guests. It comes with concierge service, a personal butler, an exclusive sun deck and pool just for Haven guests, plus a complimentary lunch and breakfast menu at Cagney’s Steakhouse. It’s a fantastic option for travelers who want to take a mainstream cruise and upgrade it into a luxury experience. And since Norwegian Jewel was the first ship to debut this concept, The Haven here is also one of the most affordable, with prices starting at around $2,700 per guest.
Is The Haven too expensive? Don’t worry, this ship also offers plenty of other room options, including different balcony staterooms and suites, so you can easily personalize your trip to fit your budget.
Norwegian Jewel will also be introducing the Vibe Beach Club in 2025. This is an extra-cost, adults-only area featuring upgraded lounges, exclusive whirlpools, a private bar, and the option to rent cabanas. It’s a perfect spot to relax on a sunny day or escape a crowded pool deck if there are lots of families cruising. Since Norwegian Jewel doesn’t have a Spice H2O bar, this seems set to become the go-to area for adults onboard.
Entertainment is solid and a step up from the Dawn-Class ships. You’ll get small-scale Broadway-style shows like Rock You Tonight and Ignite the Night, as well as comedy clubs, making it a good choice for adults looking for something fun after dinner. The ship also boasts plenty of bars that adults will enjoy, some added during the 2014 and 2018 updates. We’re talking favorites like Bliss Ultra Lounge and Shakers Martini & Cocktail Bar, which remain crowd-pleasers for Norwegian fans.
What we don’t like about Norwegian Jewel
Norwegian Jewel is a 2005 ship, so there are definitely some outdated elements and design choices. For one, it’s mostly aimed at adults since it lacks waterparks and a wide range of entertainment options for kids.
The ship does have some amazing rooms, but age starts to show in certain areas. For example, some guests have complained online about USB ports not working in their cabins or issues with the bathroom sinks. Still, you’re getting a great price for a cruise, and these minor problems barely matter when you’re chilling by the pool with a drink in hand.
Conclusion
Norwegian Jewel is a great ship, primarily aimed at adults. It offers excellent prices, as well as fantastic adult-only areas, bars, and shows. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a group of friends, or with your significant other, you’re sure to have an amazing time onboard.
