Disney Genie+ Guide for Magic Kingdom

If you are reading this, this can only mean one thing: you plan on buying Disney Genie+ for Magic Kingdom.

This is a very good idea, honestly. Magic Kingdom has over forty attractions and it’s impossible to see everything this park has to offer in a single day. In fact, it’s impossible to see everything even with Disney Genie+, but you will definitely get the chance to check out some of the best, most classic and fun rides with the help of this special service.

Advices for Disney Genie+ on Magic Kingdom

Here is some extra info and general advices you should follow if you plan on buying Disney Genie+ in Magic Kingdom:

  • Disney Genie+ is available to purchase starting at midnight on the day of your visit. Make sure to buy it through the My Disney Experience app on your phone.
  • Although you can buy this service at midnight, you can only make your first Disney Genie+ selection starting at 7am. Make sure to wake up early and get ready to select your first attraction at this exact time.
  • Remember what we told you in our previous guide when we talked about Virtual Queues, Lightning Lanes and Disney Genie+ guide: you can only hold one Lightning Lane reservation through Disney Genie+ at a time. You can book another Lightning Lane through Disney Genie+ after you use your reservation, or after waiting two hours since the time of your reservation. If you made your first reservation at 7am, though, the time starts counting once the park opens.
  • It is also at 7am that the Virtual Queue opens. You should prioritize this, since Tron Lightcycle Run uses the Virtual Queue option at Magic Kingdom. After securing your place, you can set up your first ride by using Disney Genie+.
  • If you are staying in a Disney World hotel, you can also buy an individual Lightning Lane starting at 7am. We suggest Tron Lightcycle Run or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. If you are staying offsite, you need to wait until the park officially opens so you can buy individual Lightning Lanes.
  • Magic Kingdom usually has the most expensive Disney Genie+. Expect to pay anything from $18 all the way to $35, depending on the time of year you are visiting.
  • Two popular attractions are not included in Disney Genie+: Tron Lightcycle Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Use the Virtual Queue at 7am to secure a place for Tron Lightcycle Run. For Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, you can buy an individual Lightning Lane or face the regular queue, which usually takes around 60-100 minutes.

Great, we know a little more about Disney Genie+ in Magic Kingdom. We told you before that there are many attractions here, remember that? Well, this also means that there are a lot of options when it comes to choosing the perfect ride for your Disney Genie+.

Disney Genie+ in Magic Kingdom

Okay, we are finally here. This is the name of the guide, after all, but it was a good idea to give you a heads up and show you what you should expect from Disney Genie+ at this beautiful theme park.

Heads up, we are going to create two different groups for Disney Genie+ on Magic Kingdom. The first group is for guests that want to experience every attraction that the park has to offer. The second group focuses mostly on what toddlers and kids want to see.

Just keep in mind one thing: creating a Disney Genie+ guide is really, really hard. If you opt to go to the best, most popular rides, there is a chance that you will use Disney Genie+ on fewer rides throughout the day, but you will at least enjoy the best attractions. If you choose to use it on less popular rides, you will use Disney Genie+ a lot, but then you will need to wait in the regular queue for the most popular attractions.

That’s not all, by the way. Let’s not forget that it’s impossible to predict the exact time slot of your Genie+ reservation, how long you are going to spend in lane for Lightning Lanes and regular queues, if you want to re-ride an attraction you really loved, and even if a ride decides to break down while you are waiting in line. Yeah, it’s not easy, but we are going to try our best.

That’s why we are focusing mostly on ride priority based on Disney Genie+, instead of writing down a guide that you should always follow. Trust us, it’s impossible to create a step by step guide for Disney Genie+ since time slots can be so unpredictable.

We are also dividing the Disney Genie+ priority in two groups, as we told you already. Later on, we are going to talk a little bit about each ride and why they should be included in your Disney Genie+ strategy or not.

Ride Priority A - You want to see Everything

Your ride priority should be:

  1. Peter Pan’s Flight
  2. Jungle Cruise
  3. Space Mountain
  4. Haunted Mansion
  5. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  6. Pirates of the Caribbean
  7. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  8. Tomorrowland Speedway

Ride Priority B - You want to focus on what the little ones want to see

Your ride priority should be:

  1. Peter Pan’s Flight
  2. Jungle Cruise
  3. Meet Ariel at Her Grotto
  4. Meet Cinderella and a Visiting Princess
  5. Meet Mickey and Minnie at Town Square Theater
  6. Haunted Mansion
  7. Pirates of the Caribbean
  8. The Barnstormer
  9. Tomorrowland Speedway

Note: If you are staying at a Disney Hotel, there are days when you can enter the park half an hour before everyone else. We recommend waking up early and getting there as soon as possible for the so-called “Rope Drop”. In this case, you can head directly to a popular attraction like Space Mountain or Peter Pan's Flight and enter the regular queue. This will save you time and a Disney Genie+ that you can use for any other popular attraction!

Ride Strategy Example

We told you that creating a ride strategy using Disney Genie+ is hard, remember that? And indeed it is! We were definitely not lying. Still, we decided to create an itinerary so it can serve as an example of what you could do.

Your experience certainly won’t be like this one here, but it gives you an idea of what to expect when attending Magic Kingdom and making use of Disney Genie+. This itinerary brings you to the most popular rides and tries to make it so you are not walking around the whole park like crazy, as it mostly visits attractions that are close to each other.

Let’s check it out.

From Midnight to 6:30am: Buy your Disney Genie+ for Magic Kingdom.

7am: Get in the Virtual Queue and grab a spot for Tron Lightcycle Run.

7am: Book Disney Genie+ for Peter Pan’s Flight.

7am: If you are staying in a Disney World hotel, you can also buy an individual Lightning Lane at this time. We recommend either Tron Lightcycle Run (so you can go twice) or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Park Opening: You can now buy an individual Lightning Lane if you are staying off-site. Again, we recommend Tron Lightcycle Run or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Your itinerary now depends on three factors: the time slot for you to go to Tron Lightcycle Run, when you should go to Peter Pan’s Flight and if you bought a Lightning Lane for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in the morning. Let’s say we have Tron Lightcycle Run for a timeslot that starts around 10am or 11am and Peter Pan’s Flight is a little bit later than that.

9:30am: Space Mountain (regular queue)

10:30am: Tron Lightcycle Run (virtual queue access)

11am: Peter Pan’s Flight (Disney Genie +, use Disney Genie+ now for Jungle Cruise)

11:20am: It’s a Small World

11:50am: Mickey’s Philharmagic

12:20pm: Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid

12:50pm: Jungle Cruise (Disney Genie+, use Disney Genie+ for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad)

1:20pm: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Disney Genie+, use Disney Genie+ for Haunted Mansion). Lunch break.

1:50pm: Haunted Mansion (Disney Genie+, use Disney Genie+ for Pirates of the Caribbean).

2:30pm: Pirates of the Caribbean (Disney Genie+, use Disney Genie+ for Space Mountain).

3pm: Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade. You can also skip the Parade and go to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, or leave the parade a few minutes before it ends.

3:30pm: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (regular queue, or the time you got for your individual Lightning Lane).

5pm: Space Mountain (Disney Genie+, use Disney Genie+ for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin).

5:30pm: Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, use Disney Genie+ for whatever else you wish now and enjoy the rides!)

9pm: Magic Kingdom Fireworks.

Explaining Disney Genie+ Priorities

Now it’s time to talk a little bit about some of our choices when it comes to priorities for your Disney Genie+.

Peter Pan’s Flight: This ride is almost a meme at this point when it comes to Magic Kingdom. Even if it’s mostly a very traditional dark ride, it has some of the highest waiting times in all Disney World, almost always around 70 min. A lot of guests already know that, and it’s why Genie+ runs out fast for Peter Pan. Lightning Lanes here usually take 7 minutes compared to 70 minutes in the regular queue. Sounds like a good deal.

Jungle Cruise: A classic ride that has average waiting times of 40-60 minutes. Jungle Cruise has become more and more popular lately and this might have something to do with the movie starring The Rock in 2021. Genie+ runs out fast for this ride, so it might be a good idea to grab one as early as possible.

Space Mountain: You should make Space Mountain a top priority mostly because it’s one of the best rides in Magic Kingdom and an absolute classic. One good strategy is to enter the regular queue once and then enjoy the Lightning Lane later, so you can ride it twice. Disney Genie+ for Space Mountain usually runs out around 3pm-4pm, so you might want to grab one as early as possible just to be safe.

Haunted Mansion: Another good option for your Disney Genie+. Haunted Mansion is a very traditional ride and an icon when we are talking about Magic Kingdom. Queues can get really long, around 40-60 minutes, which is a good excuse for a Lightning Lane. part of the queue is also set outside, which can get really hot during the summer, and you can skip that with a Lightning Lane.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: Unlike Space Mountain, it’s very hard for Disney Genie+ to run out for this attraction. Regular queues are also not as long as Space Mountain, at around 20-40 minutes. However, the queue for Big Thunder is in the open and can get really hot, especially during the summer, so you might want a Genie+ for this one just so you don’t scorch under the sun.

Pirates of the Caribbean: A good choice for Disney Genie+ after visiting the best and most popular rides. Queue times for this ride vary a lot, and can be anything from 20 to 45 minutes. Disney Genie+ rarely runs out for Pirates of the Caribbean, so there is a good chance you might grab one later in the day.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: Another Magic Kingdom ride with variable queue times. During the morning, queues are usually pretty long, since a lot of people are in Tomorrowland enjoying Tron and Space Mountain. Regular queues tend to be short in the afternoon. Genie+ might run out after 4pm.

Tomorrowland Speedway: Much like Space Ranger Spin, regular queue times are usually very high during the morning, but get as low as 10-20 minutes in the evening. You can skip Genie+ for this one if you plan on visiting Tomorrowland late in the afternoon.

The Barnstormer: The truth is, waiting times aren’t usually that high for The Barnstormer. Disney Genie+ also won’t save you a lot of time. Still, if your kids are 2-4 years old, this might be a good idea for a Lightning Lane. You can enter the regular queue and then use your Genie+ so the little ones can ride it at least twice.

Festival of Fantasy parade: Disney Genie+ gives you a reserved spot near Cinderella’s Castle to watch the parade. It’s usually not a very good use of a Lightning Lane, unless you really, really want that particular area. If you arrive early, you can find places that are just as good as the one offered by Genie+.

Meeting Disney characters: As you saw in our guide above, there are a lot of options for Meet-and-Greet in Magic Kingdom. The good news is that you can use Disney Genie+ for most of them. They are an excellent choice if you have toddlers in your party and kids that want to create special memories. Your options are: Mickey & Minnie, Ariel, Cinderella and Tiana.

It may surprise you that Genie+ for Ariel runs out faster than the other options, mainly because meeting Ariel doesn’t offer as many time slots as the other meet & greets. Regular lines can also get quite long.

Meeting Mickey & Minnie, as expected, is also extremely popular. Regular queues can take you around 40 minutes and Disney Genie+ usually runs out mid-afternoon.

Cinderella is another popular option and regular queues are just as long as Mickey’s. Disney Genie+ almost always runs out mid-afternoon.

Tiana has lower waiting times when compared to Mickey and the other Disney Princess. It’s usually not required to get Genie+ for this one.

Closing thoughts

Well, this is it for our Disney Genie+ guide for Magic Kingdom. We hope you enjoyed your time learning about some strategies. You might have noticed that we didn’t talk about every ride when explaining Lightning Lane priorities. If a ride wasn’t listed there, it’s because Genie+ rarely runs out or there are better options for you.

This guide is very useful, but don’t get too attached to it. Visit the rides you want to visit and spend Disney Genie+ with whatever you want, be it Space Mountain, Winnie the Pooh or It’s a Small World.

Don’t stress out too much if Genie+ runs out for some of your favorite rides. You can always enter the regular queue. Even if it's a 70 minute queue for Peter Pan’s Flight, try to relax and enjoy the moment. You are in Magic Kingdom to have fun and, as long as you get to Magic Kingdom early, there is a very good chance you will be able to enjoy the best attractions.
