Rumor: Springfield to Close at Universal Studios

No more Donuts for Homer Simpsons?

There is a chance that one of the most recognizable families in the world might be packing their bags and leaving Universal Studios within the next few years.

As you might know, Universal Studios is divided into several areas, from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Hollywood and, yes, Springfield. There, you can not only find The Simpsons Ride and many carnival games, but even a real-life Kwik-E-Mart where you can browse all the Duff beer you want.

The area is probably the most colorful one in the entire park and a treat for kids, especially since there is a good chance you might come face to face with the Simpsons, so keep your camera ready.

Mickey Mouse might be calling soon

The main problem? Universal’s contract with The Simpsons expires in 2028, meaning that unless it is renewed, they can’t use the yellow family in their theme parks anymore. You might be saying, 'That’s fine, just renew it, right?' There is a small problem, though. The Simpsons now belongs to the most popular mouse in the world, and there is a good chance that Mickey and Disney will not want their fiercest rival using one of their newly acquired IPs.

Springfield is fun, but it’s hardly an essential area for both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida. The Simpsons Ride is mostly okay, and although there are many photo opportunities, it might be better for Universal to build something entirely new based on their own franchises.

What would you want to see?

Maybe Back to the Future could make a comeback in some form? Or perhaps something related to Lego, even though Legoland exists? Or maybe a ride based on Fifty Shades of Grey? Wait, I don’t think that last one has any chance.

You might also be wondering how Islands of Adventure maintains an area based on Marvel, even though Marvel also belongs to Disney. Although no one really knows the exact deal that Universal has with Marvel, it seems that they can use Marvel properties as long as they aren’t based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe we see in theaters. So, yeah, don’t expect to see Chris Hemsworth as Thor or Robert Downey Jr. walking around as Iron Man.

What about you? Would you miss Homer and friends if they indeed pack their bags? What would you like to see take their place if Universal decides to build an entirely new land there?
