Spaceship Earth at EPCOT!

That giant white ball holds humanity's secrets

Hey, do you know that big, giant, beautiful white ball in Epcot? Yes, one of Walt Disney World’s most well known landmarks. Did you know that this is actually a dark ride that you can enjoy with your whole family? It’s true! Spaceship Earth is located just there, a fifteen minute trip through humankind’s achievements, from how our ancestors fought against huge mammoths to predictions to the future of how robots and AI will help us live in a better world. Or how they will turn into Skynet and destroy us all. Well, that last part isn’t included in the ride, but we are also allowed to make our own personal predictions, I guess.

Spaceship Earth has existed since the park opened, way back in 1982. Since then, it has gone through many updates to make the ride just more interesting to guests. Each vehicle now has its own personal LCD screen, where guests can answer a few questions about what they want for the future and click where they live in a digital world map. When you finally exit the ride, you are led to a huge indoor space full of minigames and a model of planet Earth where you can spot where most visitors come from. Certainly a nice touch that creates a sense of community.

So, what is Spaceship Earth? We say that it’s mostly an educational dark ride. It’s a long one as well, clocking in at around fifteen minutes, making it one of the longest dark rides in Disney World. You will board a vehicle for only two guests, select a language for your personal vehicle narrator, and then it’s time to check what our ancestors were doing millions of years in the past until we reach modern days and look to the future. You are about to learn how humans developed writing, mathematics, the alphabet and way more than that, which is a cool way to teach our younglings (and our… adults…) more about the history of civilization.

There is a lot to see here, and also a lot of important names to learn from, like Michelangelo (not the Ninja Turtle, sorry) and Neil Armstrong. The animatronics might not be cutting-edge, but they definitely get the job done. It’s also important to note that there are hundreds of them, and most of them have audio, which is actually rather impressive. You are going to be traveling through many time periods, so it’s also interesting to see the vast variety of animatronics that you come across, all wearing different outfits which make sense for their time periods.

This is a really fun, educational ride, which is great to relax and just enjoy the scenery. It’s also a classic, so it doesn’t even really matter if it’s an amazing ride or not. I mean, if you are in Epcot, you should definitely come here. It’s like going to Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower, or going to New York City and not checking out the Statue of Liberty. Just a heads up: come here in the evening, since queue times will usually only last 5 minutes or so.

After your journey through Spaceship Earth, you can also have fun as you exit into the Project Tomorrow exhibit space. Here, you'll find a giant room filled with engaging minigames and a massive globe depicting Planet Earth, pinpointing the origins of the guests. It's a cool opportunity to explore and enjoy interactive activities with your kids, imparting valuable lessons about different countries and fostering a sense of care for our planet.

Will Kids enjoy it?

Spaceship Earth has no height requirement, which means that it’s a good option for the entire family. Young children are likely to be entertained by the variety of animatronics from different historical periods, which can capture their interest and also educate them about significant figures in human history. With a narrator guiding you through the vehicle's speakers, it's an accessible and effective way to learn about our past.

Older kids, typically between the ages of 14 and 17, may find Spaceship Earth a bit dull compared to roller coasters and thrill rides. The slow-paced, fifteen-minute dark ride might not hold their interest as much.
