Sustainability Is Aboard the Disneyland Experience

Disneyland keeps on track with its environmental goals for 2030

Progress, progress, and more progress. Our society seems to move faster than the Guardians of the Galaxy in Cosmic Rewind. No joke. Every passing second brings forth a new product, service, or invention conceived in someone's mind. Our favorite theme parks are no exception to this constant flow of innovation. They must keep the innovation ball rolling to ensure that guests remain satisfied with each visit.

It's a reason why rides feel more comfortable with each passing year. Just compare the seats in Guardian of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewing to those of old roller coasters like Space Mountain and Kumba at Busch Gardens. It's a night/day difference.

But attention must be paid. This explosion of creativity and ongoing improvement must go hand in hand with sustainability on a global scale. Disney understands this concept well. We cannot continue to produce without considering the repercussions it may have on our environment and society. I mean, just take a look at temperatures year after year as our planet continues to warm.

Disneyland keeps up the integral work

Disney continues to strive towards its environmental goals set for 2030. One of its primary objectives is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions, which is a formidable challenge indeed. However, in a world where fairies and mystical creatures come to life, nothing is impossible. Disney persists in discovering various methods to minimize its environmental impact as much as possible.

Let’s take a look at some of the innovations Disneyland offers that support the purpose of reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the park.

Modern ways of transportation

Given the vast expanse of Disneyland, it necessitates various modes of transportation for guests to navigate from one point to another. Disneyland has ingeniously devised eco-friendly methods to facilitate this movement, ensuring a delightful experience for guests along the way!

  • Parking lot trams, powered by compressed natural gas.
  • The Disneyland Monorail offers zero-emission transportation with high-speed capabilities, providing guests with an environmentally friendly and efficient way to travel throughout the park.
  • Several attractions at Disneyland are powered by renewable energy sources. For instance, the Disneyland Railroad and Mark Twain Riverboat have been running on recycled cooking oil since 2009. Additionally, Main Street Vehicles, Jungle Cruise boats, and the Sailing Ship Columbia are powered by compressed natural gas, further contributing to the park's sustainability efforts.

What about the Radiator Spring Racers which is being partly run by 1,400 solar panels? How great, right?

  • Disneyland has taken significant steps towards sustainability by converting over 10% of its vehicle fleet into non-emission vehicles. This includes both the vehicles visible to guests and those unseen, demonstrating the park's commitment to reducing emissions and environmental impact.

The future is now

Since its inception, Autopia, one of the original attractions, has been laying the groundwork for electrification in the coming years. This ongoing effort is a testament to the park's commitment to sustainability, and we couldn't be more excited to see our favorite theme parks continue their excellent work. The future generations will undoubtedly benefit from these initiatives, just as we do.
